Port Macquarie TAFE has an award-winning new Allied health facility, which I photographed for their PR, social media and internal usage.  The new Port Macquarie Shared Health Research Education Campus (SHREC) is equipped with state-of-the-art teaching facilities including lecture theatres, student research learning areas, anatomy and medical sciences laboratories, specialist and tutorial rooms, and staff and student amenities.   The new facility brings together the teaching of three education providers, UNSW, North Coast TAFE and the University of Newcastle, offering the state’s first full regional medical degree, from 2017, which will undoubtably contribute to a sustainable local health workforce.   The photos below illustrate some of the practical facilities at SHREC.     Read More

Some days I walk out of a photo shoot and know that the world just became a better place. There is something really feminine about boho style – the floral crowns, the frills, the flowing fabrics; the embodiment and expression of mother nature.  I’ve been attracted to styles like these since I was a little girl and I love that they are so en vogue at the moment.   I photographed Mel and Nikia on the beach in Port Macquarie, Mid North Coast of NSW.  Although the girls hadn’t modelled for a photo shoot before, they both did a fantastic job.  I wanted to evoke a sense of mystery, sensuality and beauty in these portraits, and by working through a series of outfits and poses we got some beautiful images – my favourites are below.     I am available for commercial shoots as well as private photo sessions. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with your inquiry at info@aliciafox.net or 0429 211 567. Read More

I had the pleasure of photographing a professional portrait for Karen Archer last week in Port Macquarie.  I set up my studio in Karen’s clinic and had a great time chatting and shooting in a casual, comfortable style.   I first met Karen through the Hastings Business Womens Network (HBWN), which is a Port Macquarie based women’s networking group with an array of fantastic social and professional events.    Karen is the President and Spokesperson for the group.  She is also a Naturopath, Herbalist, Nutritionist and Iridologist, and through her business is committed to improving quality of life and health.  I have been lucky enough to attend one of her evening talks and walked away with a great insight into the way the body works and how to improve my own vitality. Karen was delighted with the results from the shoot, which made me a very happy photographer. If you are looking for a portrait photographer because you are in need of a profile picture for your website, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or any other social media or print, please get in contact with me.  In today’s world, our online profile photos are so important.  Although we are taught not to “judge a […] Read More

In my past life, working as a freelance photographer in Sydney, I had the pleasure of working with the wonderful creative team at Tree of Life, shooting their bohemian fashion, jewellery and homewares.  We had so much fun at head office and on locations around the city, photographing their pretty bohemian products from India, Napal, Thailand and other exotic locations.   I recently guest posted on the Tree of Life Blog about my transition from working 80 hour work weeks in the big city, to slowing down, moving to the country and building my dream home in the incredibly beautiful coastal town of Crescent Head, with my fiance, James.   You can see images from the post below. Fashion is a fun industry to work in.  It’s fun to wear, it’s fun to style and it’s fun to photograph.  For me, it’s very important to make sure the fashion I’m involved in is “clean” – good for the environment and good for the fashion industry workers, ie. Environmentally and socially sustainable. Following recent disasters like the Rana Plaza Disaster, in which thousands of garment workers in Bangladesh were killed and injured, and yesterday’s footwear factory fire in the Philiipines in which 72 were killed, the industry is shifting and  consumers are beginning to demand more transparency of the supply chain and more ethical fashion industry practices.  Fashion Revolution is one organisation doing amazing things to advance this important movement.   Photography plays a major role in promoting sales of products in the fashion industry.  Being an Eco Photographer is important to me.  It  means I support the ethical brands that are part of this fashion revolution.  These are often new, grass roots labels who are building a name for themselves from the ground up. Australian sunglasses brand, Chief Eyewear are one such brand that I had the pleasure of working with.  Their bamboo sunglasses are high quality and […] Read More

My friend Paul Martin has been rescuing injured, native animals since he was a teenager.  He is on call to rescue wildife in Crescent Head and the surrounding Mid North Coast area.  I had the opportunity to meet a gannet which Paul rescued, and witness its transformation from a weak and vulnerable animal, to a rehabilitated sea bird, ready to take on the world again.  I captured these photographs at my favourite local beach, Racecourse Beach, where Paul read the winds and picked the right time to release this little guy. Paul wrote the article below about the animal rescue.  Today I am happy to see the article land on the front cover of both the Port Macquarie Independent and the Mid Coast Courier.  It’s always great to see a good news story being shared.   Gannet returns to the wild Gannets are often seen diving spectacularly for bait fish off local beaches. This young one, however, was found by Jess Tout on the Crescent Head Back Beach on 14/4/15. It tried to go into the water but was not able to navigate the rough surf, and sat back down on the beach. Jess, who lives locally and is keen […] Read More

My fiancé James (Yes, he proposed!!!! 🙂 ) has an unmoving love of turning other people’s rubbish into beautiful, usable things. His latest major upcyling project was to build this “Tiny”.   Inspired by the Tiny House Movement, James (AKA The Upcyclist) wanted to build a comfortable and beautiful living space for someone who wants to downsize their life. Overwhelmed by consumerism and overconsumption, there is a growing trend amongst Australian’s to declutter and simplify life. This “Tiny” was built as a studio/bedroom/study, to be used in addition to an existing dwelling, much like an additional bedroom, but on wheels (which means it is mobile and doesn’t need require council approval in most parts of Australia).   James built it with 98% recycled materials. Most of these came from The Bower in Marrickville, and the rest came from other recycling yards and donations by tiny house enthusiasts.   The building gained the attention of the press, proving to be very interesting to the public. Chanel 7 news, most major newspapers and many upcycling blogs have reported on the Tiny. It is even gained attention in The UK, India, Italy and Russia. Every time we google it, we find more articles, […] Read More

As a teenager, as soon I was had grown enough to fit into my mum’s bohemian clothing treasures from the ’70s, I wore them until they fell to pieces.   I’ve always loved boho style so I’m loving the rebirth and reworking of bohemian styles, into the garments that on trend right now. Somedays Lovin asked me to shoot the festival fashion at Port Macquarie’s FOTSun (Festival of the Sun).  True to the festival’s name, the lingering grey clouds opened up, literally as I arrived at the festival gate, and the preceding week of rain transformed into two perfect days of sunshine, ideal for dancing barefoot in the sand to the live music. These gorgeous girls from Port Macquarie, Crescent Head, Newcastle and Sydney stood out amongst the crowd in their boho outfits.  Thanks for playing girls!!     Read More

Festival of The Sun kicked off on a gorgeous Port Macquarie afternoon late last year.  I was at FOTsun photographing street style fashion for fashion label, Somedays Lovin’s summer festival tour.  When the sun disappeared behind the horizon, I finished photographing street style and jumped into the media pit to grab some shots of the bands, just for fun. It has been a while since I shot live music, and I had a heap of fun.  Here are some shots of my favourite bands at FOTsun 2015, Violent Soho and Jackie Onassis. Read More

There are some labels in the fashion industry that go to extreme lengths to ensure that the products they are offering consumers are as ethical as possible. My most recent discovery of a brand of this kind is Wild Tussah, a grass roots label creating high quality products with great care and respect for all involved in the production process, from artisan to customer. As stated proudly on their website, “Wild Tussah was started with one idea in mind; to preserve traditional weave cultures through art and design for our modern day world.”   On receiving my gorgeous Day to Night bag in the post and removing it from it’s protective canvas bag, it was clear that this product has a story to tell.  So I asked Danica, Wild Tussah’s Sustainable Fashion Designer and Founder, to answer a few questions.   What is the story of the Day to Night bag, from how you selected the artisans to how it is made? The Day to Night bag was designed to incorporate a Lu weave I found in Saigon. When I first came across the weave, I didn’t know who made it. All I knew was that I had never seen such […] Read More

The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami – 10 Years On

How I came to be an NGO Photographer   It was December 2004. I was in a minivan to Colombo airport after my 3 month Sri Lankan Surf/Self-discovery trip was cut short by the most devastating natural disaster in recent history.   The coastal road was heavily corroded and our minivan full of “survivors” had reached a stand still. A traffic jam. When your very existence is surrounded by death, the last thing you want is be forced to be still. All at once people on the streets began to look panicked.  Their pace quickened and soon many were running. Others we’re climbing walls onto balconies. Some we’re yelling.   The driver wouldn’t translate what they were saying, for several long minutes. Over the previous few days I had experienced more sadness than I’d ever imagined possible, which was both numbing and calming. But still, I needed to know what was going on so I insisted that the driver tell us what was happening.   In the rear view mirror, I caught a glimpse of restrained fear in his eyes. “They have heard there is another tsunami coming”. I saw my life end that moment. My body was suspended in the density of our reality and […] Read More

I am available to photographer indoor and outdoor events in the Mid North Coast, or nationally.  Past clients include Sydney Morning Herald, University of Sydney and Victoria Rugby League.  I shoot events in an unobtrusive way to capture the energy and excitement: whether it is a celebration, corporate function or music festival.     I photographed events while living in Melbourne and in Sydney. Event organisers often hired me based on my documentary photography portfolio, which although shot in a very different environment, requires similar techniques and skills. These include understanding different lighting situations, setting up a good composition and predicting the perfect moment, as well as having the equipment necessary to fulfill the brief.         I have recently move to the Mid North Coast of NSW, where I am re-launching my photography business. There are really exciting things happening here in arts and culture, and I am looking forward to the opportunities to photograph local events and music festivals in Port Macquarie and the surrounding areas, getting to know the people, places and scene along the way.     You can contact me on 0429 211 567 or info@aliciafox.net with inquiries about you upcoming events. As the days heat up and Summer vibes kick in, up here on the Mid-North Coast, I thought I’d revisit a super fun photo shoot I did in Costa Rica for Venezuelan label, Desi Swimwear. We had a ball shooting with these Latin beauties, on the breathtaking Playa Hermosa, as perfect waves rolled in behind us. These bubbly girls were so much fun to work with. You can check out some behind the scenes shots on my Facebook page here. I’ve been having a fabulous time scoping out locations for future fashion shoots and other photo shoots around Port Macquarie and Crescent Head (and in the process, finding my new favourite beach in the whole wide world!). Being new to this area, I am so overwhelmed by its natural beauty. I feel so blessed to live in this stunning part of Australia and I’m so looking forward to all the beautiful, natural backdrops I’ll be working with in the future, on shoot like the one picture here.   It is such an honour when my photos are published in one of my favourite magazines. I am attracted to publications that are stylish, environmentally conscious and full of awesome content. Peppermint Magazine is all of these things, which is why I’m so excited to see my fashion photography on their beautiful, textured (recycled paper) pages! These photos are part of the first collection by one of Australia’s most prominent Eco Fashion Warrioresses, Carlie Ballard.   Carlie recently received the Fashion award at the Green Lifestyle Awards in Sydney, and deservedly so. As well as being one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet, she is completely dedicated to the pursuit of bringing ethical fashion into the spotlight, and making it more accessible to Australians. Carlie’s label is dedicated to supporting fairtrade artisans and using sustainable fabrics which have a minimal carbon footprint.  The gorgeous garments are designed to last many seasons.   Check out the article in the current issue of Peppermint, and see more of my images from the Carlie Ballard shoot here.   I have made a treechange, packing up life in Inner City Sydney, to move up the coast 400km to the beautiful little coastal town of Crescent Head.  Up here, life rolls by at a different pace.  I have time to kick back with a beverage at dusk and watch silhouettes of kangeroos bounce across the pink horizon.  The mornings greet me with layers of dawn bird songs over the gentle purr of the ocean: a welcome change from the roaring engines and rattling windows that once awoke me as jets landed at Sydney Airport. I don’t mind missing out on conveniences like cafes, restaurants and late night grocers.  Like when travelling, you learn to adapt to a new environment quickly, just because you have to.  You embrace it, and truly appreciate it when you stumble upon something you love. Now up here on the Mid North Coast, I will be basing my photography studio in Port Macquarie, as well as focusing more on international photo work, and continuing shooting in Sydney. I’m really looking forward to connecting with people here in the Port Macquarie and Crescent Head areas.  In a region bursting with entrepreneurs, and where local business dominates, […] Read More
