I was in Byron Bay for a fashion and lifestyle photo shoot for Japanese wetsuit brand, Moon Jelly. This boutique brand happens to come from the little surf town I lived in a few years ago in Chiba-Ken (east of Tokyo), where they hand make customised super kawaii wetsuits. The Moon Jelly crew were in Australia for the Byron Bay Surf Festival. We shot at Atlantic Byron Bay a picturesque resort in the heart of Byron. If you don’t know it, Crescent Head is a beautiful surf village half way between Byron Bay and Sydney. Our biggest town nearby is Port Macquarie. If I had known how beautiful Vanuatu was I’d have been there years ago. We have photographed resorts and hotels all over South America and Central America, but this was our first time in the gorgeous Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu. James and I headed over to Vanuatu to shoot Aore Island Resort. Just 2.5 hours from Brisbane, we found ourselves in another world. We took a quick boat from Espiritu Santo Island to Aore Island, where we were greeted by palm trees, crystal clear waters, smiling local staff and beautiful bungalows. Time slowed down. At night the group of female water drummers amazed us with their sounds. They were followed by the traditional bamboo band with their super upbeat island music and dancing. The little girl, pictured below joined with women for water drumming. She was amazingly skilled for a two year old, and stole everyone’s heart. Below: behind the scenes. Surbala is a resort wear label founded by Neha, a charming fashion designer from India. Neha sources artisans from her home country, who handmake Surbala’s collections, employing traditional Indian techniques. When I first met Neha to plan our fashion shoot, I could instantly see the great passion she has for her work, and through talking with her, it was obvious that she goes to great lengths to ensure that each Surbala piece is made with love and care. I appreciate the way she works so much that I asked Neha to share a bit about Surbala, with my blog readers. Me: What does “Surbala” mean? Neha: I came across the word Surbala when as a student, I first read acclaimed Indian poet Shri Makhan Lal Chaturvedi’s famous Hindi poem “Pushp ki Abhilasha“ (means the aspirations of a flower). He mentions the word Surbala that refers to a beautiful woman. In Hindi, technically SUR means a musical note & BALA means a young woman. The word Surbala stuck by me for a long time. And when I was thinking of naming my clothing label, I couldn’t think of more suitable name as I see my clients as beautiful and perfect ladies. […] Read More
